À l'embouchure de la ria, la barre d'Etel est un spectacle à ne pas manquer. Un banc de sable sous-marin et mouvant, qui est en réalité la continuation du massif dunaire de Gâvres-Quiberon, provoque d'impressionnants remous. À marée basse, ils peuvent se transformer de manière imprévisible en vagues déferlantes ou en vagues de fond, et causer d'irrémédiables dégâts sur les embarcations qui passent. Depuis 1806, le sémaphore de Plouhinec veille à prévenir les imprudents.

Le petit hameau de Saint-Cado est un joyau au cœur de la [ria d'Etel]. Il s'agit en fait d'une île, reliée par un pont de pierre. Hormis le point de vue unique qu'il offre sur la rivière, il abrite une ravissante chapelle romane dotée d'un portail du XVIème siècle et une fontaine datant du XVIIIème siècle. Les maisons de pêcheurs et celle d'un ancien garde ostréicole construite sur un îlot à proximité, donnent à Saint-Cado un cachet indéniable.

La ria d'Etel est un fleuve, envahi par la mer. Ses méandres font le bonheur des amoureux de la nature. Sa baie offre un paysage changeant, entre îlots et marais, parcs ostréicoles, dunes et plages sauvages. On longe ses rives à pied, côté Etel ou Plouhinec, mais aussi à vélo ou à cheval. Pour apprécier la faune et la flore exceptionnelle de la ria, on optera pour une croisière fluviale depuis le port d'Etel.
